EHV-1 Outbreak
Issue No.  1

Dear Horse Owner,

As you may have heard, there has been an outbreak in the Western States of EHV-1 stemming from a National Cutting Horse Association  (NCHA) Western National Championship competition held April 28-May 8 in Ogden, Utah.  The number of confirmed cases continues to rise and in fact, there has been a confirmed case local to us that is now in quarantine at Pilchuck Equine Hospital in Snohomish.

EHV-1 (Equine Herpesvirus) Outbreak
What You Need to Know:

What it is:   Equine Herpevirus-1 is a virus that can cause respiratory and neurologic problems as well as abortion in mares.  It can also be fatal.

How is it spread?  EHV-1 is spread by horse to horse contact, coughing or sneezing (up to 35 feet), contact with infected equipment (grooming items, water buckets, bits), contact with people through contamination of hands and clothing as well as aborted placentas and fetal tissues.  It is extremely contagious.

What are the symptoms? The incubation period is 1 to 10 days but is primarily 1- 3 days. Viral shedding (when the horse is contagious) is generally 7-10 days but can be as long as 28 days from onset of symptoms.

Symptoms include: Mild fever - 101.5 - 102.5 (this may spike later after returning to normal ranges), nasal discharge, coughing, neurologic symptoms such as incoordination, weakness of the tail, hind limb weakness,  inability to empty the bladder, urine dribbling, lethargy, inability to rise and abortion in mares.

Situations that expose horses:  Horse shows, horse transport, boarding barns, public facilities or anyplace that allows horses to be transported in to use the facilities.

Since EHV-1 can be fatal, immediate supportive care (and quarantine) is critical.

If you have any questions or are concerned about a possible exposure, please call our office as soon as possible.

       SPRING 2011

Well?  I hope it will warm up soon...man, been a wet and cold one huh?  I don't know about your horses, but mine started to shed, then sortof stopped, and now just look like a pack of shaggy dogs!

Spring has found me settling into Big Lake Stables as the main location for haul in lessons, and training horses.  The snow, and rain took a toll on the barn for a month or so, but all is dried out now, and we thank the underground moisture for a no dust arena!  After we get the new paint/ gravel in the driveway/ and finish remodelling the lunch room/ keep an eye out for a spring social event!!!  I would like to thank all our clients following us there, and helping us warm up the barn!

This winter I was offerd an opportunity to ride some drill routines on  clients horses, and had SO much fun, I will offer “drill for horsemanship” at Big Lake on Satudays, for the price of arena fee only.  Its a fun way to check your horses attention, work on conditioning, practice your skills at rating, and the social aspect similar to those on a trail ride.  Check the calendar for days, and please give a courtesy call if you might attend.

I also was invited to a larger arena to do some lessons further south, and had a wonderful time.  Currently we are lessoning at “Paramount Equestrian Center” in Arlington, and look forward to tuesday mornings there.  Please do not hesitiate to come watch and see if you would like to join the group to tune up, or work on specifics....its all fun!

....Fire Mountian Freisians outdoor trail course is open to the public for practice, playdays, and fun.  Only 30 minuites from my location, we will be hauling there to prepare for mountain obstacles, and working with our horses in a safe environment!!!
Big Lake Stables has given its blessing on many group events....from vet visits, to centered riding, to saddle fitting....we appreciate their willingness to support all the activities involved in study, health, and well being for both horse AND rider!!!  Keep an eye on the calendar for upcomming health and social events.

Ken McNabbs clinic at Rhodes River Ranch is scheduled, and gaining momentum for 2011.  There are only 2 spots to fill in the riding schedule, but lots more room opened up for auditing, and the morning special events should bring even more fun to the clinic.  Its always entertaining to be in the barn with Ken, and Rhodes River is a lovely place to share the good fun and great horsemanship.

Hope you enjoy following Matney on facebook, she has been a busy girl.  Her training, music, and studies keep her on the go....she will have a real adventure with “ride to rendezvous” first week of May.  I will drive over for the “dirty parade” when they come into town after a week on the trail....Friday morning, May 6, let me know if you want to drive over, and cheer them on, we can carpool!!!

Then, my last exciting news of spring, is my trip to Wyoming for the ranch horse sale at the Diamond McNabb ranch first of June.  Bonnie has graciously offered me a ride over, and my dream of visiting Kens ranch is finally going to come true.  NO, I am not buying a horse....just going over to enjoy the atmosphere, and watch as one of Kens dreams continues to grow.

Thank you all for the friendship you share, the horsemanship we enjoy together, and the warmth and spirit that you bring to every event we do.

Love and safe rides  TLC

April 2010

Spring greetings!

Well it feels like spring....around the barn.  Horses
are shedding and the grass is growing.

I would like to send a note to our clients and barn visitors, concerning some horse keeping reminders and changes around the barn.

We are still struggling a bit with some not addressing the modest haul in fee of $ 5.00 per horse/ prior to the riding and lessons. Please help us with this, if you are not attending to it already?  And I really appreciate all my friends/ clients helping share this with new faces in
the barn.  There is also a $5.00 fee for use of the wash rack, and we all enjoy the use of it, warm water, a safe place to rinse and wash!!!!....

Alice and Gary have been working hard to upgrade the grounds, including and at a large expense....adding new material to the arena surface.  It looks so nice, offers safe footing to ride and work in, we have asked and
posted signs for all of us to please clean up, AND pick up manure and horse hair, and hay.  There are red buckets, and a convenient pick right in the alleyway from the arena under the stairs, please help us to keep our arena clean and tidy?

Last note, is a change for horses brought by a single rider.  There is additional work to be done on the arena walls, prior to having more than just 3 safe tying areas, so with a full barn of boarders, and TLC training going on, it has become very difficult to have riders bring
additional horses that are not being ridden.  I do not encourage any horse be left outside tied to a trailer unattended.  We are thinking of offering a "day stall"  @ $7.50  per 1/2 day use.

Russlin Pines is helping the horse community with  group veterinarian visits monthly/ blanket wash and repair drop off with Robin of"hoof beat blankets"/centered riding lessons monthly with Karen Irland/ barefoot farrier service 6 to 8 week intervals with Daphne Jones/ Sheila Kellers healing bodywork massage/ and Dr. Regan visiting from Idaho every 6 weeks..."special events" offered regularly, along with TLC training and the fun we enjoy.  There are sign up, and information boards in the barn alley.
A quick note to let you all know the "playday for mayday" will be rescheduled for later in the spring?
Russlin Pines has been attending to all sorts of clean ups and upgrades, and will look forward to inviting you for a little open house/ spring event in the near future.

Thank you for helping us with the growth and sparkle  'round Russlin Pines!!!!

Love and safe rides  TLC

Meet the 2009 HEAL Facilitators

HEAL Facillitator Graduates 2009

Human-Equine Alliances for Learning
and instructors, Leigh Shambo and Kathleen Barry Ingram, proudly announce the 2009 class of graduates from the Facilitator Training Program.   Nine women from around the globe successfully completed the program on October 17, 2009.

Together, Leigh and Kathleen developed this program to prepare counselors, teachers, and coaches (including equestrian professionals) with practical training and experience for developing Equine Facilitated Learning programs.  The graduates learn to facilitate horse activities in a way that optimizes relational ability, emotional well-being, and empowerment.  These nine individuals, with varied backgrounds and life stories, rigorously undertook the challenge to uncover hidden truths and gifts, discovering their own unique ways of presenting and teaching the HEAL Method of EFL.

Matney Cook

Ms. Cook is a partner and trainer at TLC Horsemanship in Mt. Vernon, Washington.  She is a Ken McNabb Certified Master Trainer who offers safe and gentle coaching for both horse and human who walk the path towards true connection through self-aware horsemanship.

About her work and the HEAL program, Ms. Cook says, "What were dreams for me a year ago are now a reality because of this life changing HEAL program.  Not only have I learned skills that enable me to step into my soul's purpose, I've also gained the confidence to facilitate others on their journey to authenticity.  I am so grateful to my instructors for helping me to hear the horses calling and learn to believe in my own magic."
